Quick answerTo take home a set amount each month in Pakistan, you need a higher gross salary that covers your income tax. The calculator finds the exact gross figure using the FY 2026-27 salaried slabs.

When to use it

  • Negotiating a new job offer and you know the take-home pay you need.
  • Checking whether a raise covers your rising expenses after tax.
  • Employers setting a "net of tax" salary for staff.

How the reverse calculation works

Normal salary tax runs one way: gross salary goes in, tax comes off, take-home comes out. Going backwards is trickier because the tax depends on the gross, which is the very thing you're trying to find. The calculator solves this by testing gross figures over and over, narrowing in until the take-home matches your target to the rupee. It takes a fraction of a second.

You could do it by hand too, if you know which slab you'll land in. Say you want Rs 200,000 a month in hand. That's Rs 2,400,000 a year. Guess that the gross falls in the 20% slab (above Rs 2,200,000). The take-home in that slab is gross minus Rs 116,000 minus 20% of (gross − 2,200,000). Set that equal to Rs 2,400,000 and solve, and you get a gross of Rs 2,595,000 a year, or Rs 216,250 a month.

Quick reference

Here's what you'd need to earn before tax to take home these amounts in FY 2026-27:

Take-home per monthGross neededTax per month
Rs 80,000Rs 80,303Rs 303
Rs 100,000Rs 100,562Rs 562
Rs 150,000Rs 156,742Rs 6,742
Rs 200,000Rs 216,250Rs 16,250
Rs 250,000Rs 279,556Rs 29,556
Rs 400,000Rs 488,235Rs 88,235

Notice how the gap widens as income rises. At Rs 80,000 take-home you only need a few hundred rupees extra. At Rs 400,000 take-home you need nearly Rs 90,000 more a month in gross pay, because a large part of your income sits in the 29% and 32% slabs.

Using this in a salary negotiation

Most offers in Pakistan are quoted as gross monthly salary. HR teams sometimes add allowances, fuel, medical and a provident fund contribution and call the whole thing a "package". That number is not what you'll see in your account.

Before an interview, work out the take-home you actually need to cover rent, school fees, fuel and savings. Put it in this calculator. The gross figure it gives you is your floor. Ask for something above it, because provident fund and EOBI deductions will come out too, and this calculator only covers income tax.

If an employer offers a "tax-paid" or "net" salary, they are promising to cover your tax themselves. That's fine, but the tax they pay on your behalf is treated as part of your income. The real cost to them is the gross figure shown here.

Comparing two job offers

When you have two offers on the table, compare take-home pay, not gross. A Rs 400,000 gross offer gives you Rs 338,000 a month after tax. A Rs 450,000 gross offer gives Rs 373,500. The headline difference is Rs 50,000, but you only see about Rs 35,500 of it. Factor in commute, working hours, health cover and growth before deciding. Sometimes the smaller offer is the better deal.

For employers

If you run a small business and want to pay a staff member a fixed amount in hand, use the gross figure here as their salary on paper. Deduct the tax shown, deposit it with FBR by the 15th of the following month, and issue a salary certificate at year end. That keeps both of you on the right side of the law.

Limits of the tool

The result covers income tax only, based on the salaried slabs. It assumes the whole gross amount is taxable and that you have no other income. Provident fund, EOBI and other deductions will reduce your take-home further.

Frequently asked questions

What is a reverse salary calculator?

How much gross salary do I need to take home Rs 200,000 a month?

In FY 2026-27 you need a gross salary of about Rs 216,250 a month, which carries Rs 16,250 of monthly tax. Use the calculator above for the exact figure for any amount.
